Prevalence of Substance Abuse Among High School Students in Hamedan, Iran in 2015 |

Introduction: Substance abuse is one of the main health challenges leading to addiction and physical, psychological and social issues, which -in addition to individuals- can eliminate the foundation of family and community. The present study aimed to determine the frequency of experience of at least one-time abuse of addictive drugs and substance in high school students in Hamedan. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study carried out in 2015 in high schools of Hamedan using self-report questionnaire for identifying the amount of smoking cigarettes and other addictive substances. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software (SPSS version: 14). Findings: Out of 800 distributed questionnaires, 29 questionnaires were incompletely delivered or were not completed. In total, 18% of the students had at least once addictive substance abuse. The most commonly substances were hookahs, cigarettes, alcohol, Independent risk factors for substance abuse experience includes male gender, non-governmental and vocational schools, mathematics major, history of school failed experience, and an average of less than 17.00 GPA, unemployment of a student's father, and student employment other than education. Conclusion: The prevalence of hashish (cannabis) abuse and anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) is high in Iran and codeine is the most commonly used substance in the non-prescribed groups. |
